Questions about Mesotan
- What is Mesotan?
-
Mesotan is a hand-made survival world of 4,096 × 4,096 blocks, made with WorldPainter, World Machine, Gaea, Axiom and WorldEdit, built for Minecraft Java 1.12. You download the world folder and play it like any other save, in singleplayer or on your own server.
- How big is Mesotan?
-
4,096 × 4,096 blocks, so about 17 million blocks of surface. Walking from one edge to the other takes roughly 16 minutes at normal walking speed. The terrain runs from Y 0 to Y 255.
Outside that area the world keeps generating normal vanilla Minecraft chunks, so you never hit a wall, you just leave the built part behind.
- Which Minecraft version does Mesotan need?
-
Mesotan is built for Minecraft Java 1.12. Newer releases normally open it fine. Opening it in an older release is not supported: blocks and structures added after that version cannot load, and the world can be damaged by the attempt.
Bedrock players need a converted copy. See the Bedrock notes in the FAQ.
- Which biomes are in Mesotan?
-
6 in total. The land is mostly Desert (50.4%), Badlands (33.5%) and Plains (16.1%), counted as shares of the land rather than of the whole map.
Water covers 24.3% of the map, and land 75.7%.
The full breakdown is further up this page, with every biome and its share.
- Which structures are in Mesotan?
-
0 of the 19 structure types the scan checks are confirmed present: surface (0/7), underground (0/6), ocean (0/4), portal structures (0/1) and settlements (0/1).
Not confirmed: Desert pyramids (not checked), Igloos (not checked), Jungle pyramids (not checked), Pillager outposts (not checked), Swamp huts (not checked) and Trail ruins (not checked). "Searched, not found" means the scan looked and came up empty; "not checked" means it has not been looked for yet.
The structure list above names every one of them.
- Where do I download Mesotan?
-
From the download link on Patreon, also on the button at the top of this page.
Also available: the PlanetMinecraft project page, which carries the release notes and the known issues for this particular build.
- Can I look at Mesotan before downloading it?
-
Yes. Open it in the 3D explorer and fly the real terrain in your browser, with the biomes, the caves and the marked structures. Nothing to install.
How do I install Mesotan on Java Edition?
- Unpack the archive you downloaded from Patreon.
- Open your saves folder. On Windows press
Win+Rand enter%appdata%\.minecraft\saves. On macOS it is~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves, on Linux~/.minecraft/saves. - Move the unpacked folder in. It must be the folder that contains
level.dat, not a folder wrapping it. - Restart Minecraft on 1.12 or newer and pick the world in singleplayer.
Can I play it on Bedrock, or on a server?
Bedrock needs a converted .mcworld copy, and converted worlds carry their own
quirks around spawn, chests and villagers.
For a server, drop the world folder in as the server's world and start it.
What may I do with it?
The worlds are released under CC BY-NC 4.0. The Rights panel on this page lists what that allows and how to credit it.
